Eunuchs CRIMAL ACTIVETES in Lucknow ??

LUCKNOW: Residents of Lucknow have decided to challenge eunuchs. Extortion and terrorising tactics by eunuchs have been on the rise for quite sometime in the state capital. There have been over a dozen such cases in the past one month. But now resistance is on its way. Veteran's Sahayata Samiti has knocked at the doors of DIG, Lucknow for help.

The samiti members, led by its president Col Mohan Chandra Papnai (retired), alleged that eunuchs in general go on extortion spree virtually door-to-door. They demand anything between Rs 11,000 to one lakh depending on the occasion and the status of the family.

Residents are either forced to cough up the amount they demand or they are made to go through humiliating experience of listening to choicest expletives apart from the embarrassing situation which may end up in a 'nude eunuch dance'. They move around in sports utility and other luxury vehicles, claimed the samiti.

The samiti has also launched a helpline for the victims. To find a way out of this menace, the samiti has decided to hold a seminar on May 29. DIG DK Thakur has been invited as the chief guest in the seminar, the samiti president said.

HC allows hermaphrodite to sit for paramilitary forces exam

The Delhi HC has allowed a hermaphrodite to take the recruitment exam of the Sashastra Seema Bal. Earlier, the force had denied her employment, as she did not have ovaries. Overturning the home ministry observations, justice Geeta Mittal said, “The rejection of the petitioner… on grounds of medical un-fitness in the medical examinations and findings of Dr K Bhushan, Additional Director General, ministry of home affairs is arbitrary, irrational and illegal and hereby quashed”.

Geeta Luthra, counsel for Sunita (name changed), had filed a petition stating the force’s medical panel found her unfit for the job last year because she was a pseudo-hermaphrodite, a person who has ‘XX’, or female chromosomes  but has masculine reproductive organs.

“The paramilitary forces’ medical panel declared her ‘unfit’ because she had her ovaries removed. The force turned down her appeal for a review, which a doctor from Sanjay Gandhi Medical Government Hospital in Lucknow strongly recommended,” Luthra told the court.

The court directed the  force to evaluate the physical standards of the petitioner and conduct a physical efficiency test of the petitioner within a period of 3 months, after giving the petitioner at least 2 months notice of the date and time of the examination and test.
The judge said, “If the petitioner clears the same, she would be held entitled to forthwith recruitment”

Hijra/eunuch at Shivananda circle Harass women - Absence of police control

Hijra/eunuch at Shivananda circle - you saw a beggar earlier and now this. The police thinks that the job of controlling this menace in society is that of someone else. They perpetuate such rot and complain about it themselves. Sometimes the transgenders harass people badly. Do we need this rot if we call orselves educated? Nobody has organised rehabilitation into decent jobs

for them.

Eunuchs Prowling in Hyderabad

Law and Order has always been a problem in any Congress-I government in Andhra Pradesh. It is quite a problem even in the state capital with Eunuchs – young and even the old attacking innocent people and demanding for money. It is really a shame that this thing has never been curbed by the present government although I would say its never too late to act!
A number of Eunuchs get their make-ups done and hit the roads as early as 9 AM to prey on their victims. If its not your day then you might come under their attack from any direction! Especially the Himayat Nagar main road has become a dangerous zone for common public, in particular the young boys and girls who are inexperienced in dealing with these kind of rogues. One has got to be very alert from keeping away a distance from the approaching army of Hijras.
If you are somewhere in Himayat Nagar on your bike, then better turn back and see if there’s anyone likely to approach you and also left, right and straight to stay away from the possible harassment from these Eunuchs. Be very alert if you have a little kid with you, the best thing is to get inside some shop straightaway! Mind you, there could always be the possibilities of the Eunuchs even pulling out a knife to stab a person not yielding to their demands, they may not be backing away from creating any sort of physical damage to the victim, so it does make the entire episode very scary. Renuka Chowdharyji can you do something for the young women if not men who are becoming victims to this menace? This is not the ‘Talibisation’ that interests you but the ‘Eunuchisation’ happening in our AP State that is not filmed by our alert Electronic Media.
There is also a similar problem during train journeys in Andhra Pradesh. All of a sudden you have a bunch of Eunuchs entering the train and troubling the passengers. They first molest any young man and then demand money at the face. I was in the middle of a nice nap in a train at about 6 or 7 in the morning when a eunuch had come to wake me up in a disgusting manner. The moment I opened my eyes I had to see the horrifying face, something nobody wants to when they just wake up! As I had a laptop worth 50k with me, I thought it was better to shell down the money for safety.

This is an ever growing menace unless it is arrested. There was some sort of a welfare done for Eunuchs during the TDP regime, or atleast promised. I hope that the YSR government does treat this as an issue. I know they have no vote bank among the eunuchs who can’t vote but think about the common man on the street who is getting troubled by them. People would like you to do something Sir, we would love to see an ‘Indiramma Padhakam for Eunuchs’ or even on the name of our great Rajiv Gandhi. May be a 5-paise vaddi scheme for the eunuchs could do something positive for the society, please think over!

Eunuch Menace  in Railways

I am a regular traveller in Southern Railways - Brindavan Express and Lalbagh Express between Chennai and Bangalore. For the past one year, there is a lot of trouble given by eunuch's to passengers in this sector. These people do not spare reservation compartments also. They target young men and demand money. If they are not given money they resort to slapping and pinching the men. They use foul language . This is such an inconevenience to passengers. Kindly do something at the earliest.

Same thing happened to me in Brindavan Exp. Its a serious issue because one of the eunuch(hijra) grabbed my younger son who was 4 at that time. Touched his face even his lips I guess. I saw that the eunuch had some spots near the mouth and some white pus kind of material was there. They smell bad anyway, and I guess they don't take a shower at all. After a few days my son started some itch near his mouth and under arms. He used to scratch a lot and I took him to a doctor, the doctor said it is a skin disease and it was contagious. The doctor gave him strong antibiotics for a two week period. My son was in the bed for 2 weeks crying because he could not eat anything, nor sleep due to the side effect of the antibiotics. After that the symptoms were gone and my son was alright. But the doctor said it may reappear again if my sons immune system is not strong enough. My son has to live with the fear the rest of his life.

Now here is my thought of reasoning, in what way are the eunuch's helpful in a society? They dont behave properly in public. They cannot reproduce. They don't want to work and earn money. I don't think they would donate anything back to the society. In fact I donated blood near my temple, when there was a blood drive.

I have seen some eunuch's working regular jobs like selling flowers or small cleaning jobs etc. But the ones on the trains are just ridiculous.

Eunuchs are a medical anomaly. If they are really born with an undefined genitalia they can be considered as eunuch. But the ones on the train are born with well defined organs and they go through a procedure of removing their genitalia by a blunt rusty knife. Of course they would transmit all kind of diseases to each other and to innocent people.

How ignorant can we be? We should come up with laws to abolish removing genitalia with knifes. If someone really wants to remove, they should go to a doctor. Yes it costs very much, so if they cannot afford that, they can keep the genitalia, what difference will it make?. Like Sati, dowry and child marriage are abolished, we should abolish this ritual of using blunt rusty knifes to perform surgery.

I mean there are lot of people born with deficiencies(being blind, no limbs or deaf etc.) So what is the big deal about genitalia? Why cant they just behave in a society? Is it that the laws are defined only for men and women? What about deaf, blind or handicapped people? can they behave ridiculously and get away with it?

Yes, I think the police should be very strict with them. They should not be allowed on trains without tickets.

Eunuch menace is back

Just last month, Bangalore Mirror reported that city police had decided to crack down on eunuchs extorting money from people at traffic signals. A few days after the report, eunuchs were not to be seen at several traffic signals. However, they seem to have returned to harass people. A bunch of eunuchs at Sony World signal, Koramangala, is particularly troublesome. This morning, I witnessed an unpleasant incident at that signal. Two eunuchs surrounded an auto and pestered the commuter to pay up. They were almost inside the auto, doing God knows what. When the signal finally turned green, one of them even got into the auto. I do not know what happened after that. But it was really scary to watch. Those of us who commute by two- or three-wheelers are the worst affected. What happened to all the promises of action against this menace?

Bangalore: Top cop gives his men three days to put an end to eunuch menace
Often, eunuchs make lewd gestures to force people shell out money

In a belated move that is bound to see Bangalore police’s popularity ratings shoot up, city police commissioner Jyothiprakash Mirji has given his force a three-day deadline, starting Friday, to curb the eunuch menace. At various signal junctions across the city, transgenders – sometimes it is just men masquerading as women – harass motorists and collect money from them, and Mirji has authorised his men to arrest such offenders under the Karnataka Police Act. They will be booked either on charges of creating nuisance in public or under the Beggary Act. Mirji will formally brief his officers on Friday morning on how to go about it in their respective jurisdictions, but on Thursday he reportedly told his men over wireless to get cracking right away. Senior police officers will also interact with different associations that represent transgenders to assure them that the police will act only against those members of the community indulging in such acts.
“We are very serious. We will be taking necessary action in three days. Many people have complained to me directly about problems they face from certain eunuchs,” Mirji told Bangalore Mirror.
The problem is especially acute in the Majestic area, M G Road, Residency Road, St Mark’s Road, Koramangala, Indiranagar, BEL Circle and Airport road. The eunuchs, often numbering two or three, accost motorists – mostly those on two-wheelers or in autos – and demand money.
Those who refuse to pay are showered with abuse, threatened, groped and sometimes even assaulted. In some places like Majestic, eunuchs even resort to chain snatching and robbery.
Unescorted young women are particularly vulnerable. Dona Mathew, a young techie, recounted a frightening experience. “Last week, I and two friends were travelling from Forum mall to Domlur in an auto.
Our auto stopped at the Sony World signal. Suddenly a hijra (in a saree) approached our auto. She first asked money and touched our heads as though blessing us. We were reluctant to give money, but then she started abusing us and warned us that she would kiss each of us on our mouth,” Dona said.

“When my friend gave her a Rs 5 coin she rejected it and asked for 100 rupees. My friend who was closer to the hijra got scared and gave her 100 rupees. But the hijra refused to relent. She wanted money from the other two of us as well and started making lewd and repulsive gestures.” Even the auto driver’s intercession failed to dissuade the hijra. The women in the auto were spared further indignity only because the lights turned green.

“Such incidents keep happening in various parts of the city and despite the presence of traffic police. The cops often look the other way,” Atul C, an executive with an MNC, said. But the police commissioner appears determined. “It is a serious issue. I think three days is enough to solve this problem and I am confident my men will get rid of such troublemakers,” Mirji reiterated.
On the orders of the city police commissioner, Upparpet police have already shifted more than 10 eunuchs indulging in such acts to Beggars Colony.

Eunuch menace near railway station

Eunuchs have become a nuisance to the already harassed public near the railway stations in the suburbs. These eunuchs take advantage of the slow moving traffic in and around the station area and pounce upon passengers alighting from rickshaws for alms.

They block the way and grab people's hands to compel them to give away money. Commuters allege that the traffic police and the police on duty are silent spectators. Office going ladies, young girls and college going students are the favourite targets of the eunuchs. Girls, women, young boys fear their misbehavior and vulgar comments.

"We belong to the service class are have limited income. We try to save money by boarding share-a-rickshaw but these eunuchs try to grab whatever change we get in return from the auto rickshaw drivers. They are so strong that we can't even defend ourselves from their clutches. The police should chase them away and jail them. Only then they will stop harassing public," said Rohini Srivastav from Tilak chowk Kalyan west.

Harassed commuters say that they really want the authorities to take some strict action. "If the police will not act fast then we will be forced to thrash the eunuchs in public. That's the only way to stop this public nuisance," complained Kunal Karnik, Sameer Sawant and Rahil Shaikh from Kalyan west, students from RKT college, Ulhasnagar.

When DK Plus confronted the traffic policeman on duty he retorted, "We are here to regulate the traffic and not to mind the eunuchs. Police Inspector Avhad, Mahatma Police station, said, "We always take action against them, we have even sent them to jail for days together but they are freed by court on paying a negligible amount as fine. After keeping away for a few days they return to their spots and start begging again.

They run away as soon as they see a policeman. But as DK Plus has brought up this serious issue I will take strict action against them and place a few policemen on duty at this particular area to get rid of these culprits," assures Avhad.

GRP to crackdown on eunuchs' menace on trains
KANPUR: In order to tighten the noose around the eunuchs who 'extort'
money from the passengers on trains, additional director general of
police (railways) A K Jain has issued a circular asking the GRP
officials at Kanpur Central railway station to curb such illegal
practices.

Referring to the complaints made by a large number of passengers in
the recent past, Jain, in his circular, has said that eunuchs who
misbehave with passengers should be nabbed.

He has instructed the GRP officials to launch a drive at railway
stations across the state.

The GRP officials at Kanpur Central are presently on a lookout for
five eunuchs who have been involved in chain snatching, bag lifting
and money extortion on trains.

The officials admitted that some eunuchs were arrested earlier but all
were released for want of a solid proof.

"Eunuchs usually operate in groups of two or three. They board trains
and demand money from passengers. Those who confront them have to face
their wrath. Eunuchs strip themselves in public to embarrass the
passengers. Thus people usually give money to avoid such problems,"
GRP inspectorParamhans Mishra said.

He further said that at times, eunuchs also steal bags of passengers.

Showing a copy of the circular which he has received from the ADG,
Mishra said, "Instructions have come directly from the headquarters to
take stern action against eunuchs who demand money from passengers.
Presently we are conducting security drills at the station, which has
alarmed them. It is difficult to find them at the station or in
trains. But if they are found anywhere in and around the station, they
will be arrested. They will not be allowed to travel without tickets."

Meet Timothy Brown, first man to 'cured' of HIV-AIDS

Timothy Ray Brown, 45, from San Francisco Bay Area, is in the news - as the first man cured of HIV-AIDS. "I think so," he calmly tells his interviewers who ask if he actually is cured.
Brown has been facing cameras, gun mikes and diagnostic kits ever since the publication of a research paper on his unique case in the journal Blood in December 2010.
The researchers led by Kristina Allers and Gero Hutter at Charite University Medicine Berlin documented what can be dubbed as a miracle.
The successful reconstitution of a set of white blood cells that the HIV eats up in Brown's body is a "very rare" occurrence, they noted.
Brown, who was tested HIV back in 1995 in Germany, was later diagnosed with another disease - leukaemia or blood cancer that involves an abnormal increase in white blood cell.
He was treated with bone marrow stem cell transplant - a cure for blood cancer. The stem cells came from a donor with a rare gene mutation that involves immunity to HIV - again a rare occurrence.

Stem Cell Trick
How Brown was cured

The mechanism involved special white blood cells called CD4+ helper T cells. When a dangerous material like a bacterium or a virus is detected in the body, immune cells immediately stimulate these special cells. The helper T cells further activate and direct other immune cells to fight the disease. HIV specifically attacks helper T cells, making the body unable to launch a counter offensive against invaders. Hence, AIDS patients suffer from other lethal infections.
The researchers in Berlin showed that after stem cell therapy Brown's body had reconstitution of CD4+ T cells at a systemic level and specifically in his gut mucosal immune system.
"While the patient remains without any sign of HIV infection," they wrote.
Brown has quit taking his HIV medication. The secret is that if the white cells could be manipulated to a state in which they are no longer infected or infectable by HIV, that would mean a functional cure.

Researchers, however, have warned that though the study offers promise, it is not a surefire cure from the dreaded disease - transplants are risky, and this involved a very rare transplant.
Brown is a rather lucky man. He said in a recent interview that appeared in the San Francisco media about his cure: "It makes me very happy - very, very happy."

Kashish GAYSEX film festival 2011 ???

GAYSEX 2011, which will show 124 LGBT films from 23 countries, was approved by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and has failed to rouse the ire of anti-gay campaigners.
India only decriminalised gay sex in 2009 and filmmaker and festival director Sridhar Rangayan told IPS that the festival was a “spin-off” of that court decision.
He said: “Last year when we organised the festival, it was a great success. We also found after a proper survey that at least 28 per cent of the audience in the festival was from outside the LGBT community, from the mainstream.

“The participation of people at large shows a change in social attitudes – gays are not seen as ‘criminals’ anymore. The image of a gay man or woman is changing.”
The festival will run until Sunday at a multiplex. Around 2,500 people are expected to see the GAYSEX films

Eunuch arrested for murdering live-in partner ??

Tired of getting fleeced by the man whom she thought loved her, Nisha, a eunuch, brutally murdered him on Thursday night. She has been arrested. Police said Nisha's live-in partner Surender was stabbed on the abdomen, chest, hand and neck. After killing him, Nisha 'ransacked' the house to it look like robbers had killed the victim.

ok like robbers had killed the victim.
Police said Nisha was in contact with Surender for the past 10 years and used to help him financially; she gave him money to set up a shop in Sonia Vihar.
"Over a period of time their relationship got strained, as Nisha got to know that Surender was using her and sending money to his family members in Saharanpur. On Thursday night Nisha found that R3.5 lakh was missing from the house and suspected Surender had taken the money. They had an argument over it," Sanjay Kumar Jain, DCP (northeast) said. Surender was also pressurising her to purchase a house in his name.

"After the argument, Nisha stabbed him brutally and even cut his neck. After that she ransacked the house. The next morning, she went to Rohini with her group to attend a ceremony, something that she could use as an alibi," the DCP added.
When the murder was discovered, Nisha told the police that she wasn't home when Surender was killed.

"To obtain initial clues, the scene of crime was thoroughly examined from various angles. The details of the victim were gathered and extensive enquiries were made regarding his personal and professional life. The eunuch was also examined as she was the last person who saw the victim alive," Jain further said.
There were glaring gaps and contradiction in Nisha's statement and she was subjected to sustained interrogation. After which she broke down and confessed to the crime.

Bangalore Eunuchs Harassing Motorists At Traffic Signals ??

Top cop gives his men three days to put an end to eunuch menace
City police commissioner J P Mirji has ordered his men to book transgenders
harassing motorists at traffic signals, and forcibly collecting money from

Oh! At last some hope of relief. Thank you Mirji ji - Elyas

Looks like Mr Mirji is ordering things to his men which will help the entire
bangalore population from these nuisances. But we are waiting when his
stern actions will start against DANCE BARS,MASSAGE PARLOURS also which
are not nuisance but menace to our society as these evil girls are destroying
and ruining thousands of families. We sincerely hope that he takes actions
against them at the earliest if he is not afraid that his men will be loosing
lakhs of Rs as hafta from each of these bars. - surin

Govt should support them to get a job.None of the private or govt origination
offer jobs for them. What else they can do? Action needs to be taken in the
form of providing jobs and equal rights rather than arrest under nuisance in
public or under the Beggary Act. - Arpitha

Cops get a cut?
I am happy to read that the police are attacked by eunuchs. Finally, they will
understand the trauma we undergo whenever we stop at the signal lights.
The number of eunuchs has increased so rapidly, now there are hardly any
traffic signals on Hennur Outer Ring Road where you do not find them.
Everyday, we get a mouthful of abuse from them if we do not give them
money. The police who stand there are too busy collecting fines from
motorists and are blind and deaf to the problems people undergo here
because of these eunuchs. I sometime wonder whether these cops too get a
share from the money collected by these eunuchs.
— Vikram

Demo tactics
These eunuchs resort to unpleasant acts and extort money. It is a pain to halt
at traffic signals in Bangalore, especially for two-wheeler and three-wheeler
riders. It is heartening to see that the police have taken some steps now after
one of their own has been attacked. Right under the nose of our police
commissioner and just outside the police commissioner’s office at Infantry
Road junction and all surrounding signals these eunuchs are harassing
people. They start fighting for their rights when they are questioned or
stopped, staging a demostration or a public stripping in protest. Such acts
should not allow them to get away with their misdeeds.
— Sudheendra M G

Eunuch vote bank
I have personally witnessed how these eunuchs harass motorists. They take
advantage of the red signal and pull off the ignition keys of the two-wheelers
and demand money. The hapless riders have no other go as they have to
move as soon as the signal turns green. So they pay up without any other
alternative. This is nothing short of blackmail. Several complaints have been
registered with the police, with no concrete action on their part. Now that one
of their own brethren has been subjected to the “treatment” they suddenly
spring into action by mobilising their force to search for the culprits. The
government is also not very enthusiastic about nabbing these erring eunuchs
with the idea of a “eunuch vote bank” in future.

Sex workers’ union activist assaulted in Bangalore By Hejads ??
The night of May 11 was one that Rinky (name changed), a third-sex member
activist and sex worker with Sangama, will never forget. The member of the
Karnataka Sex Workers Union was brutally assaulted by eight people from
the Hijra (transgender) community on Airport Road. She sustained several
injuries, besides being subjected to great psychological abuse.

“She was stripped naked and forced to drink urine and gutter water,” said a

Hijra. The offenders left after snatching her earrings and bag. The incidents

on the previous day are said to be behind this attack. On Tuesday, while she
was with some hijra sex workers soliciting customers, a heated argument
ensued regarding a theft on the previous day in the area.

Rinky expressed unhappiness over the increasing number of theft cases in
the community. Some hijras joined the argument and Rinky decided to go to
one hijra’s house to resolve this issue.

“The attack on me is a fallout of that argument. I have filed a complaint. Of
the eight who attacked me, police said, three have been held. I was
discharged from Bowring Hospital and am recovering from the attack but now
I am scared as they will be looking for me,’’ said Rinky, at a press meet on
Thursday.

A city-based voluntary organisation said it would launch next month a
year-long campaign in a bid to add dignity to the lives of sexual
minorities in the society.

The organisation, Sangama, decided to launch the campaign following
the mysterious death of a 23-year-old transgender at her house in
Nethaji Nagar on Monday.

Even as the KP Agrahara police were suspecting that the deceased,
Kumari Velu, had consumed poison, gender rights activists said they
suspected foul play.

Velu’s family preferred to cremate the body without informing the
police. However, a few activists, who were informed of the incident,
approached the police.

The police were suspecting that Velu consumed poison after her parents
demanded her to crop her long hair. Velu’s parents reportedly told the
police that she became unconscious after coming out of the toilet.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Victoria Hospital. The
police sent the viscera to the forensic laboratory for further
investigation.

Velu had been working as a management information system coordinator
at an NGO, Suraksha. She was also pursuing her final year BCom.

Meanwhile, several human rights activists and psychiatrists would be
joining the Sangama campaign.

“Everyday we receive one or other cases related to violence and
discrimination against the community. This has also led to a rise in
suicide cases in the community. The campaign is to end discrimination
against the community and help them lead a normal life,” said Shubha
Chako, secretary of board, Sangama.

Three transgenders in Bangalore committed suicide in the past 15 days.
At least 29 transgenders in the city had taken the extreme step over
the past 15 months. Ten others were found dead under mysterious
circumstances.

Sangama said that they faced resistance from police as well as the
family members of transgenders while registering cases.

“The society is biased against the community. Even the police and
government do not help the community,” said 27-year-old Akkai
Padmasthali, a transgender and gender rights’ activist.

Transgender held for Attacking ???

A 27-year-old transgender, who was arrested last week for conspiring to eliminate his alleged lover of one year after the latter got married with a woman, escaped from police custody on Saturday. Kiran alias Anuja Narsingh Koli pushed the constable, jumped off the auto rickshaw while being taken to the lock up. Taking advantage of the bustling Shanipar Chowk he melted into the crowd.

Koli has also been booked for escaping from police custody. A case has been registered at the Vishrambaug Police station. On May 4, Koli's alleged lover Shridhar Khandave (24) was attacked by three unidentified men.
According to a complaint lodged by Khandave's wife Anamika, three men stormed into their house and attacked her husband with hockey sticks and wooden batons, leaving him seriously injured.

The men who attacked her husband threatened him of dire consequences if he didn't continue his alleged relationship with Koli. The trio said that they were sent by Koli. According to Anamika's statement, Koli was forcing Khandave to continue their relationship even after marriage. But when Khandave turned down his overtures, the jilted lover went to the extent of plotting his murder.

Transwoman refused entry at Dubai Aairport ??

Jen Janice (see pic above) is not a well-known name in transactivist circles but many see her as having done so much more than others for making great strides in the corporate world. Jen Janice is currently a Program Manager for a multinational based in the Netherlands. She has worked for the same company for many years in Singapore where she is originally from until two years ago when she decided to make the big move to their Netherlands head office.

I had the honor of meeting Jen in Copenhagen for the World Outgames where she talked about her rise in the corporate ladder as an out and proud transwoman. We hit it off really well and have kept in touch since. Besides her obvious intelligence, corporate savvy and professional credentials, Jen is a very caring, sweet and motherly person. I know for a fact that she has mentored a lot of underprivileged transgirls while living in Singapore. She is also a great cook and I have seen her whip up a storm in the kitchen producing the most delectable of foods.

It was a shock for me to learn that she was held at the Dubai airport on her way back to the Netherlands on a business trip. She wanted to visit some friend in Dubai but was not let in. You can read her full story below. Fortunately, Jen wants change at the Dubai airport and hopefully her case will be the first step towards better treatment of all especially transgender people when they enter the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Transgender being refused entry into Dubai
Being showcased like an attraction

Baffled, sad and most of all upset. Those were the feelings which came up when Jan
Janice reported at Customs at the airport of Dubai - one of the seven Arab Emirates
- together with other passengers. What should have been a pleasant visit to friends ended up in a drama. "As a transgender, I have never ever been so humiliated onto the bone".

Without the faintest idea, Jen Janice got off the plane on that hot December day
and went through Customs. A few days ago she had decided to continue to the
United Arab Emirates to visit some friends, after a business meeting in Kuwait. She
was very much looking forward to it, as it had been a while since she seen her
friends. But in her wildest dreams she would not have guessed the end result. "I
was queuing up at customs and I was dressed modestly. When it was finally my
turn, the customs official studied my passport. He then called for help from passing-by colleague". Jen Janice was stunned. Because she is unable to speak Arabic, she could not make out any of the conversation following that. His stern
facial expression then changed when he heard a remark from a colleague. "I was clearly the subject. A few times, he looked at me in minute detail and then back into my passport. That was so humiliating." Because she has not had her Sexual Corrective Surgery (SRS), Jan Janice is still registered as a male.

And then the long wait started. Jen Janice was taken out of the queue and into a separate room. "Another man joined them and together they started asking all sorts of questions. What I wanted to do in their country and why I looked the way I do? One of the officials just could not understand why I am a man but look like a woman". The men did not know what to do with her. Next, like a criminal she was taken to yet another room where she had to wait for hours again. When I asked if I could call one of my friends, they reacted rigidly that that was absolutely not possible. They also asked me why I wanted to be a woman. They were very intimidating. On top of that, it was very humiliating that more and more customs
officials came into the room just to have a look at me. They all started laughing/giggling. Although it had not been mentioned yet, at that time it daunted upon me that I would be deported."

She still is livid having been put up as a curiosity. "My passport reads that I am a
male. But from when I was nineteen, I already felt like a women. This has never been a problem work-wise. My management and direct colleagues respect me for who I am."
In the airport the doors were opened up and Jen Janice was taken to another room by
some airport ground-handling staff. In the departure hall we caught the attention of quite some people. In the room where she subsequently had to take place were another fifty or-so people from different countries who just like Jen Janice, would be deported. "I then lost courage. I was told officially that I would have to leave the country immediately. I felt dismayed and could have easily cried. My dignity was at stake. No reason was given as to why I had to leave. I was extremely sad that this had to happen to me. I had only wanted to visit my friends and meant no harm. Via Blackberry, I then finally managed to contact my manager. She was on the road and reacted upset when she heard my story. My employer then offered
help and arranged for my return trip. Not easy, because many flights had been canceled due to the heavy snowfall at Schipol airport. I was really lucky being able to leave so quickly. Else, I might have had to stay for two days in that room amongst all those other deportees.

Back in the Netherlands, she is determined not to drop the story. Although the planned visit to her friends was purely for pleasure, her employer is supporting her wholeheartedly. "Early January, I have sent a letter to the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Singapore as I still hold a Singapore passport. But up until now I have not received a reply. The Singapore embassy in the United Arab Emirates is looking into the matter. "In future, without a doubt, I will need to travel for business to the UAE more often. So then it should be clear as to what I can expect. We've got a big leap ahead of us before transgender ladies can be themselves. All my life, I've been fighting to prove that I'm just like everyone else. The
fact that I have to continue to proof myself is inhumane."

Dubai Court Fines Man For Crossdressing

An Indian national working in Dubai as an administrator with a property development company has been sentenced to a six-month suspended jail term and fined $2,722 for cross-dressing and wearing mascara in public, the Dubai newspaper Gulf News reported. According to the paper, the man was arrested by a police officer in civilian clothes in the Mall of the Emirates in what the police described as a glittering outfit, a bra, mascara, women's perfume and a wig. The defendant claims he was cross-dressing as part of his preparation for a small part in an upcoming Bollywood movie, when he received an urgent phone call. He also disputes claims that he tried to bribe the police officer who arrested him, arguing that he simply offered to pay the fine on the spot.

There are approximately 1.2 to 1.3 million Indians currently working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to Indian diaspora groups. While most migrant workers from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh work in what was until recently a booming construction industry, there are also a large number of Indians working as white-collar managers in a variety of private companies in the seven Emirates that make up the UAE. While Dubai has worked to promote itself as modern and open society, human rights progress remains scant. According to Human Rights Watch, authorities censor and harass human rights activists, impeding independent reporting that could help curb abuses.
