Hours after the Crime Branch cracked the Sonia De murder on Tuesday, Mirror spoke to Sanju Masi who has been named the mastermind behind the murder. Sanju was at her Bhavaninagar residence in Amraiwadi, watching herself on news channels covering the sensational murder. Sanju and her husband Shehzaad have been named accused in Sonia De’s murder. Sanju Masi got married to Shehzaad eight years ago. A team of Crime Branch sleuths have been posted at her home to keep an eye on her while she is recuperating after being burnt in an accident at her home a few months ago. According to sources, once Sanju recovers fully, she will be arrested. Interestingly, on November 27, Sanju in an interview with Mirror had claimed that she had no part in Sonia De’s murder and wanted cops to arrest the culprits. However, this time, she not only accepted her part in the murder but was completely unapologetic about it. “Sonia used to harass me and Shehzaad. She would also harass his family members. She attacked my elder sister Hasumati and her family members too. She wasn’t a eunuch. She ruined my life, I took my revenge,” said Sanju justifying her involvement in Sonia De’s murder. “I made Imran into Sonia De. She used to work for me. But her ambitious nature ruined her. She left me and formed her own gang,” fumed Sanju. Sanju and Sonia had been adversaries for a long time, their rivalry a legend among the eunuch community. “She formed her own gang and started poaching in my territory. My gang was the most powerful in Satellite, Thaltej and Vastrapur, but Sonia De’s gang ruined everything. The situation was so bad that we were forced to beg for food,” said Sanju. However, Sonia and Sanju’s enmity reached a flash point when, four years ago, the now dead eunuch threw acid on Sanju while she was admitted to a hospital in Surat. “She threw acid on me. I had to be in hospital for a long time because of that. She would kidnap people from my group and beat them up,” alleged Sanju. So, to put an end to her ‘sufferings’ and ‘save’ her group, Sanju decided to put an end to the Sonia menace. “I had decided before Diwali that I will put an end to Sonia’s tyranny. It was becoming difficult for us to live due to her terror,” said Sanju Masi, who is recuperating from her burn wounds.
Sonia De alias Imran Ajmeri’s mother Nasreenbanu Ajmeri thanked the Crime Branch for solving the mystery behind murder of her ‘son’. “I came to know on Tuesday that the Crime Branch has found Imran’s murderer. I am thankful to them,” she said. However, Ajmeri alleged that Sanju Masi had got help from someone close to Sonia. “I am sure that someone known to Imran has helped Sanju to kill my son. The CCTV cameras at Imran’s house was not working the day before he was killed. Also, several pieces of jewellery and cash were missing from the locker at my son’s home. The bank locker also had very little valuables. Someone close to him is involved in this,” she said while urging cops to dig a little deeper to find the traitor in Sonia De’s group. “Imran helped several people financially. The police is investigating whether it was an insider job, a land deal gone sour, if any political leader was involved or business associates had bumped her off.
On Thursday night Sonia De had just moved out of her house in Mirzapur on her two-wheeler and had stopped at a panipuri seller near Roopalee theatre when three bikers came and pumped four bullets into her. She died on the spot. Some ornaments and Rs 68,000 were found on her.
According to police sources, the eunuch leader had been active in land and property dealings for the past few months. In this connection, she had purchased a house near Haji Malang Dargah in Kalyan, Maharashtra, recently. A fight with the property dealer had resulted in questions being raised whether the dealer was behind her death.
Usually, Sonia moved around with husband Yusuf and another aide, Saddam, in her SUV followed by other vehicles. When she was killed she was alone and had taken a two-wheeler, giving rise to speculation that it might have been some insider’s job. It seemed a well-planned killing as the assailants knew exactly the time she would leave her place.
They reached in no time as Sonia was having panipuri and gunned her down. She was taken to V S Hospital where she was declared brought dead. A panel of four doctors conducted postmortem on her body. Five bullets were removed, one of which was lodged in her body when she was fired at some years ago.
Crime Branch has picked up eight suspects in the case from Dariapur. They are being questioned. Statements of around 25 people who were present at the spot when the incident happened have been taken. Sonia’s mobile call details have also been procured.
It is also being said that the Akhil Gujarat Eunuch Association president had called up a political leader on the phone and threatened to reveal his secrets unless he helped resolve cases against her. This angle is being investigated, sources said.
A week ago, the eunuch had reportedly gone to Surendranagar and threatened an antisocial, Jila Bharwad, to deliver Rs 8 lakh within a week or she would expose him. Cops are probing this angle too.
Police sources said that Sonia De had given Rs 2 crore to three persons in Khokhra-Maninagar to be circulated in the market on interest. Another Rs 40 lakh she is said to have invested in a scheme with one Ashraf in Dubai. These persons might have taken her out of the way, as they might not want to return her money. This is one of the line of investigators, as also the differences in jurisdiction between eunuchs.
Crime Branch ACP Mayur Chavda said, “It looked like there were two killers who used sophisticated guns as there was no sound when the four rounds were fired one after the other.”
Sonia De’s real sister Faridaben Ashfaq Patel, 23, who filed a complaint at Karanj police station after Sonia’s death, states that she had gone to Law Garden with Sonia’s adopted child, Afreen, on Thursday night when she received a call that Sonia had been fired at. She rushed to the place, but she had died by then.
Rival eunuch gang leader, Sanju Masi, categorically told Mirror, “I have no role in her killing. Since the start I have been saying that Sonia is not a real eunuch and the way she had created her empire through illegal means she had brought a bad name to eunuchs. She had made many enemies in the process and her death might be the outcome of that.”
Case of Missing Gun ?
Sonia moved around in an SUV, followed by a couple more vehicles of her loyal aides. The outgoing eunuch had become a target for her controversial ways. To keep herself secure, she surrounded herself with supporters and is believed to keep a revolver for self-defence. It had reportedly gone missing for the past eight days since she returned from Mumbai. When her end came, she neither had any aides with her, not had any weapon to protect herself.

NEW DELHI: After months of detention at a beggars' home, a transgender caught begging in south Delhi was allowed to walk free after the intervention of a Delhi court. Setting aside the order of a special metropolitan magistrate sending appellant transgender Rani to the beggars' home for two years, district and additional session Judge AK Chawla said: "The appeal is accepted and the order of detention is set aside." "It is ordered that the appellant be released after due admonition on a personal bond of Rs 1,000. Appeal stands disposed of accordingly," the court said in its June 6 order. The court said that the transgender had a right to lead a life of dignity and earn a livelihood.
"The appellant undisputedly is a transgender and it is a hard fact that in our society, transgenders are being shunned even today," said judge Chawla. "It is difficult for them to get even menial jobs. The impugned judgment is also totally silent and does not reflect nor is there any material on record to show the circumstances in which the appellant was living," the court.
Truth on Eunuchs Income in INDIA Daily ?
By society standards, the community of eunuchs falls into the category of marginalised and deprived fraternities. But, believe it or not, they earn more money than most ordinary people.
As a community, their daily income is anything between Rs10,000 and1 Rs1 lakh. They mainly earn from collecting money during the festive seasons or during auspicious occasions like birth of a child or inauguration of any business establishment.
However, earlier eunuchs used to earn not much amounting to may be Rs50 to Rs500 from any occasion, which is not the case now. They have increased their rates in the range of Rs500 to Rs5,000 depending upon how much the host of the event is willing to give. It also depends on the area where the event is being held as that adds to the amount of money the eunuchs get as bakshish.
Sonia De Pavaiya alias Imran Ajmeri had more than 100 disciples (chelas) who worked for her and earned huge money as a group. She lived a lavish lifestyle and roamed in the city in an expensive and chauffer-driven Toyota Fortuner.
Sources who knew Sonia claim that her income was more than Rs50,000 per day. “Sonia lived lavishly and was always seen wearing expensive gold jewellery,” said a source. “She had more than 100 chelas who would work for her.”
Eunuchs are a deprived class and live in big families. Their residence place is known as akhadas whose names are kept after the names of the gurus of the eunuch community. The chelas respect their gurus and are obedient. They live and work as per their guru’s wishes. The chelas mainly work between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm.
Sources familiar with the fraternity claimed that there are dozens of akhadas in the city and their gurus earn descent income. This income is used for the maintenance of the akhadas and chelas’ daily expenses. Most of the eunuchs buy gold while some of them also invest in stock market. During festivities and auspicious occasions, a guru can earn as much as Rs1 lakh a day.
According to market sources, the eunuchs collect huge amount of money from big mega malls, shopping centres, showrooms, restaurants and hotels. They demand money between Rs50,000 and Rs1 lakh. Many a times, city police get complaints stating that eunuchs harass shop-owners by demanding huge amount of money from them.

We found more than 1.5 kilograms of gold and silver ornaments frequently worn by Sonia at various occasions. When the find was known, many of her disciples and associates jumped in the fray and staked a claim on the gold ornaments. We are, however, yet to resolve this ownership issue," said a Karanj police official.
H G Patel, deputy commissioner of police, Zone II, told TOI that they are yet to find clues in the case. "The find at her residence including land ownership documents has been analyzed by police investigators. While officials are pursuing certain theories, we have not given anybody clean chit yet. Questioning of all the associates of Sonia De and gathering of evidences is on," said Patel.
Cops have so far questioned Sonia's relatives, her associates and those persons whom she met or called on Thursday, the day of her murder. As her mother was out, her statement was recorded on Monday. Officials said that the details of Sonia's bank accounts have been sought from family members.
While Sonia had kept a gun with her for self-defense, all that police managed to find during the search was an air gun. Cops also found documents containing names of Zaheer Rana, an accused in a multi-crore fraud. "If needed, Rana will be questioned," police said.
